PORTIA ROY
GRAPA Artist Portia Roy
Portia Roy´s art is at once deeply personal and purposeful. Her work is inspired by both the profound beauty and brutality she has experienced in her native India. Her art is in response to a socially constructed world that she rejects; one in which not all women are created equal, and a world in which women often find themselves powerless, victimized, and voiceless.
Portia skilfully uses the art of engraving, her main medium; incising intricate designs and patterns onto plywood and in so doing, permanently imprinting her vision of a world in which all women enjoy choice, equality, and respect.
Portia is an emerging artist who lives and teaches art in Delhi, India. She has exhibited her work in India and the United States.
In her collection for THE GRAPA she showcases some of her most personal pieces that expand on themes of power, vulnerablity and human resilience. These themes connect with other artists around the world who use their feminist art to demand social justice for women everywhere.
